Maria was born in Havana, Cuba, but relocated to South Florida with her family when she was only 11 months old. She grew up in the Miami area, learning the diverse Cuban American culture.
Maria decided to expand her horizons by attending Indiana University for her undergraduate degree. At Indiana University, she studied psychology and the liberal arts. While in college, Maria served on the Student Athletic Counsel, where she served as a diplomatic liaison between visiting athletes and the school administration. She also assisted on a research project for Professor Heller in the psychological department, studying the effects of the home environment on perception and behavior. Maria graduated from Indiana University in 1982 with a B.S. in Psychology and minor in Spanish.
Thereafter, Maria attended DePaul Unversity in Chicago, Illinois, studying various business courses before choosing to embark on her legal education. Once Maria realized that she wanted to pursue a legal career, she enrolled at Indiana University, College of Law, where she engaged in a wide spectrum of legal academics and practicum writing workshops. Maria obtained her J.D. from Indiana University, College of Law in 1987.
Maria became licensed to practice law in Florida in 1989. She initially worked as a claimant's attorney, representing injured workers at various stages of the workers compensation process. Later, Maria recognized her interest in advocating for employers and their workers compensation carriers in the workers compensation arena. Maria strives to vigorously defend workers compensation claims on behalf of employers and their carriers, through the discovery process, at trial, and during settlement negotiations.
Maria has been married to her husband, Kevin, for 22 years. They have 1 son, Patrick, who is attending the University of Central Florida. Maria is an avid reader. She is fluent in Spanish and English.
